More about Aptivate and our work…
We work with other non-profits, charities, and NGOs as technical consultants, facilitators and trainers, web / software developers, and to provide hosting services, on a wide range of projects. We are based in the UK, and work in-country where appropriate.
We also carry out projects in our own areas of interest, mainly focused on increasing global access to web resources. We do this by promoting low-bandwidth web design; making tools to help network managers, and people browsing the web in less well connected environments; and providing training workshops and resources.
Our recent projects include:
Training rural women in Zambia in IT usage, working with Camfed; Creating an online data capture system for maternal health indicators for the Clinton Health Access Initiative; Researching the impacts of technology in Zambian classrooms, as part of a DFiD funded project; Building an online health service score-card system for the International Health Partnership.
We share the interests of our partners and clients – we are committed to providing appropriate solutions that address actual needs, not technology for its own sake.
We’re currently 13 people working full and part time, in Cambridge and Brighton, assisted by a number of volunteers. Our plan is to expand the team to about double this number. It is important to us to grow sustainably, from both a financial and cultural perspective.
We mainly work on Linux environments, with a couple of client-specific projects that are Windows-based (e.g. Microsoft Access systems). We’re currently developing in Django/Python and PHP, using Python where we have a choice. Some of our older projects which we work on from time to time are Java-based.
We provide a world-famous lunch for anyone found in our offices!
