Position: Web Developer++
Are you looking to use your technical skills for social benefit? We are a not-for-profit organisation focusing on IT in international development, and we are looking for an exceptional software engineer to join our team.
The person we’re looking for would be passionate about:
- Software engineering and open source technology;
- International development;
- Being part of a small, supportive team where everyone mucks in.
We use:
- Agile practices for our software development and project management;
- Participatory methods to engage with our clients and users;
- Consensus decision making to organise ourselves.
…so you should be at least interested in these practices, and any experience would be a distinct advantage.
We will consider talented individuals from any background, however demonstrable experience of web development and confident HTML / CSS usage is essential, and knowledge of the following technologies would be an advantage:
- Python / Django
- Linux
- CMS integration, e.g. WordPress / Drupal / Joomla etc
- Testing frameworks
While we expect you to be doing a lot of technical development with us, we don’t have, or seek, people that just do one thing – we all wear many hats. We’re looking for capable people who are good at learning and love working as part of a team. You should be prepared to get involved with any of the following activities:
- Facilitation and Training
- Proposal writing
- Network administration
- Representing the organisation at events
- Office automation
- Blogging about our work
- Other ad-hoc technical wizardry.
Whenever we can, we pair-work on various activities; not just pair programming but pairing on all aspects of our work to share ideas and skills. You might even find yourself pairing on the accounts one day. You must be up for pair working!
As part of a small team, you should be comfortable with project management, and running demos for clients. Everyone in our organisation is client facing.
You will be expected to participate in decision making processes within the organisation including strategic and management meetings.
It is possible to work from either our Cambridge or Brighton offices. If you are based in Brighton you should be prepared to travel to Cambridge at least once a month. There are likely to be opportunities to work in less developed countries as part of this position.
If your primary motivation for working is financial reward this might not be the job for you! While we are committed to looking after our staff (each other), we recognise that we do not pay ourselves the commercial rate for our skills. Our current terms for staff members are:
- 35 hours per week.
- 6 weeks paid holiday plus bank holidays.
- Flexible working hours.
- We support part time positions where appropriate.
To apply, send us a copy of your CV or other description of your relevant experience, a description of why you’d like to work with us, and some examples of previous work.
Do get in touch if you’d like any more information.
