Aptivate's multi-disciplinary team represents a wide range of commercial and international development experience. All the current members of staff volunteered for the organisation before employment - the team is highly committed. Aptivate is supported by a number of volunteers, with expertise ranging from rural fieldwork and programme development to GIS and micro-electronics.
Dominic Vergine, Chief Executive Officer,
Director
An experienced company director and successful entrepreneur, Dominic is Aptivate's Chief Executive Officer. He represents the organisation internationally and has key relationships in academia, the business community and in the development sector. He is an executive board member of the ITU Connect the World initiative, director of Enclusion Ltd, and is on the steering committee of The Humanitarian Centre, Cambridge.
Alan McNeil Jackson, Chief Technical
Officer, Director
Alan is an expert in the use, risks and benefits of ICTs in the development sector. As Chief Technical Officer of Aptivate, he directs the programmes that give us the world-leading reputation we enjoy. Alan constantly drives the team to innovate and comes from a successful commercial IT background. He is a qualified paragliding instructor and experimental musician.
Chris Wilson, Chief Engineer, Director
An exceptional programmer, Chris is Aptivate's Chief Engineer and is responsible for implementing the company's technology strategy. With expertise in bandwidth management, firewalls, network security and Linux, Chris has built much of the software on which Aptivate's reputation is based. He works on several open source projects and enjoys nature photography.
Tariq Khokhar, Chief Development Officer,
Director
Tariq is Aptivate's Chief Development Officer. Experienced in working with clients in Africa, The Middle East, Japan, USA and Europe; Tariq has a broad technical background, and is responsible for developing relationships with new and existing partners. He enjoys street photography, languages and the sense of taste. He has worked in the broadcast media, commercial technology, charity and financial services sectors.
Cate Oxtoby
Cate is a project manager and researcher. She began her varied career lecturing in English at the University of Cape Town, and has gradually migrated into ICT via a degree in Natural Language Processing. She has many years of experience within the software industry, as a developer, technical author, and in business development.
Jim Jepps
Jim focuses on research, report writing and internal administration at Aptivate. He has a background in sociology and social care, and outside the office, Jim pursues interests in writing and politics.
Liz Fearon
Liz is a project manager with a background in development studies, having worked on democratisation assistance programs in South East Europe. Liz splits her time at Aptivate between field projects and sector research. Her work on bandwidth management in universities has attracted the interest of the World Bank and the Carnegie Corporation of New York.
Martin Burchell
Martin works on technical development. He has over ten years experience in commercial software engineering, working in embedded C programming and GIS systems. Outside of work he is involved in the fair trade movement, and enjoys cycling up mountains.
Tom Daley
Tom has a background in electronic engineering, and is responsible for Aptivate's IT systems which include thin clients, hosted web services, knowledge management and collaboration environments.
Tom Lord
Tom works on project management and volunteer management for Aptivate, and has various experience in the private sector working on database design, software development, system administration and quality assurance. He maintains strong links with local community groups, from which Aptivate draws some of its volunteer pool.
